A track-by track breakdown

This has been an amazing group effort from the ‘Croissant Crew’, involving vocalists, musicians and producers from all over the world. It started as a crazy idea on Threads and has gradually mutated into this five-track EP.

Here’s the lowdown on the mixes:

  • J’Adore Les Croissants (CommsBreakdown’s Club Mix) – An homage to the humble croissant 🥐 ❤️ 🎶 , taking some 90s French grooves and adding the sultry spoken vocals of Key of D Music and Tina Hyde. Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove, with a hot croissant in your hand!
  • J’Adore Les Croissants (Nic’s Pain Au Chocolat Mix) – Nic adds some serious French cuisine to his remix, with a large dollop of groovy Gallic disco. Let the electric piano wash over you and feel that funky bassline taking you to the dancefloor.
  • Croissant Ave (DarpSyx’s Retrowave Mix) – Step into your time machine and head to the 80s with DarpSyx’s retrowave mix. Thick synth bass, retro drums and evolving arpeggios take you to your own personal 80s movie.
  • J’Adore Les Croissants (Stimeral’s Petit Macaron Mix) – Stimeral’s mix strips the track back to its bare bones and introduces the true rhythmic essence of the croissant. The kick drum hits you hard as the bassline warps and adds the occasional sweetness of a petit macaron.
  • J’Adore Les Croissants (CommsBreakdown’s Downtempo Mix) – Turn down the tempo and relax with a midnight croissant as you head back from the club through the silent city streets. Half-speed grooves and epic orchestral strings merge to take you on a chilled trip to the patisserie.

The making of J’Adore Les Croissants

Everyone loves a croissant, right? And everyone loves a cool dance track. So we decided to bring these things together for a highly groovy and silly floor-filler.

The track started when my Threads friend, Tina Hyde, posted a voice note of her saying ‘Croissant’. I jokingly replied and said I should make a tune about croissants. I sampled the voice note and wrote a 90s French house track around it.

Then I wrote a very rough verse in French and sent it to my other Threads friend Didier (Key of D Music) and he wrote and recorded all the other verses and made sure the French grammar was totally correct (he’s a Frenchman living in the US).

We thought it was too good to just have one mix, so I shared the stems of the music and vocals with my producer friends Nic (Nic and Shugmonkey), Daniel (DarpSyx) and Oscar (Stimeral) and each of them came up with a remix. Then I tried my own remix, going for a downtempo, orchestral kinda vibe.

So, this is a track born from social media connections and the internet.

I’ve not met any of the croissant collaborators in person, but we all follow each other on social  media(apart from Nic who doesn’t do social, haha). And it’s an international track too. I’m a Brit in Australia, Didier is a Frenchman living in the US, Tina is in the US, Nic is in the UK, Daniel is in Spain and Oscar is in Spain too.

It’s silly. It’s groovy. And it’s international. I think we need that at the moment, right?
