REMIXES OF THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE: A NEW EP OF RADICAL REWORKINGS

If you liked the Frequencies Of The Southern Hemisphere album (go check it out, if you haven’t!), you’re gonna love Remixes Of The Southern Hemisphere! 🎹 🎛️ 🎶 🔥

The Remixes Of The Southern Hemisphere EP features six amazingly original reworkings of tracks from Frequencies, with some glorious mixes by Masefield Labs, nic/Shugmonkey, Twitchy Bones, DarpSyx and Stimeral (oh, and Commsbreakdown too, of course!)

The EP kicks off with dancefloor energy and takes a journey through trance and electronica, before dialing down the vibe for some dub, downtempo and soundtrack chill.

It’s always an honour to get your music remixed by such talented producers, so please do go and check out their Bandcamp pages and dive into their own original music too.

A deep dive into each track on the EP

This is such a varied collection of remixes, with each producer taking the original track in completely new and unexpected directions.

For me, as the original artist, that’s one of the most exciting parts about handing your track out to a remixer – you get to hear a completely different take on your tune, with new sounds, new arrangements and new ideas in the melting pot.

So, let’s dive into these mixes and find out what they sound like…

1. Rain Down For Eternity (CommsBreakdown’s White Noise Mix):

This mix of Rain Down For Eternity reworks the original ambient electronica version from the Frequencies Of The Southern Hemisphere album and takes it straight to the dancefloor.

Alongside the dub-influenced tape echoes and drums of the original, this mix adds white noise percussion, gated synths, an ethereal cut-up vocal sample and a thumping kick drum to create a driving club mix.

2. Minnamurra Falls (Masefield Labs’ Heading Home Mix):

Masefield Labs transforms the ambient soundscapes of Minnamurra Falls and takes the track from the Australian rainforest and straight to the club.

A brand new chord progression weaves its way through the original synth sounds, with a haunting female vocal and insistent 4/4 rhythm giving this rework the trancey sound of a festival at midnight.

3. Behold The Dawn Chorus (nic’s Kingfisher Wat Mix):

The multi-talented nic (Shugmonkey + Born Again Choom) keeps the early-morning kookaburra ambience of the original Behold The Dawn Chorus, but shifts the sounds from the Australian bush to Asia.

The sounds of the Aussie bush merge with Buddhist temple percussion and the fattest of dub basses, as the original guitars drift and evolve over a heavy dub rhythm section.

4. Slipping Into Sunday (Twitchy Bones’ Glasgow Dub Mix):

Twitchy Bones dissects the original Slipping Into Sunday and rebuilds it as this awesome, lush, evolving Glasgow Dub mix.

Snippets of guitar echo around the stereo image as low-end dub sounds shake your speakers and the original synth melodies are chopped, fractured and flown back into the mix.

5. Run Like The Wind (DarpSyx’s Slow Motion Mix):

DarpSyx keeps the sound of Aussie nature and reworks Run Like The Wind! into a slo-mo dreamscape.

Echoing drums and huge synth sounds swirl around your headphones, as the original bass guitar line is slowed down to anchor the track and merge with the low-end synth bass.

6. The Calm Before The Storm (Stimeral’s Floyd Mix):

Stimeral strips the original The Calm Before The Storm back to its bare bones and takes it in a whole new direction.

The remix focuses in on the Gilmour-esque lead guitar and builds a shifting, evolving soundtrack for an imagined movie, with a repeating rhythmic pulse and echoing synths creating a stormy, rain-filled mood in your head.
