Stars Gone Bad: Turning A Comedy Sketch Into A Club Banger

In music, you never quite know where your inspiration is going to come from.

Sometimes you get a particular lyric or melody stuck in your head. Sometimes you’re in a particular mood and want to turn that vibe into music. And sometimes you watch a comedy sketch on YouTube and decide to turn part of it into a club banger, haha 😁

Turning a comedy song into a club classic

Crackermilk is a comedy sketch group from Brisbane, Australia, with a growing following on YouTube. I happened to be watching their YouTube sketch ‘Disney Channel Stars the moment their contract ends’ a few weeks back. It’s a very funny parody on how Disney Channel actors (like Miley Cyrus) go full on wild and crazy the second they don’t have to stick to Disney’s rules.

Crackermilk actor/influencer/comedian/singer Emily Kristopher sings a pastiche ‘bad girl’ dance track in the sketch, but with no musical backing – just a great acapella performance of this crazy (and rather racy) club song. So, I thought, why not take Emily’s singing and actually turn it into a real massive club tune…as you do!

How Stars Gone Bad was made

This is how ‘Stars Gone Bad’ came into existence.

You can listen to the full track here.

I recorded Emily’s vocals straight off the YouTube video and into my laptop, then chopped up each section in Logic Pro (my digital audio workstation, or DAW) so I could play selected phrases of the vocal across the MIDI keyboard.

Then I programmed a club-style four-to-the-floor drumbeat in Logic, layered several layers of drums and percussion, and added a bassline and other synth parts in the right key to make this sound like a genuine club track.

Amazingly, it all fitted together perfectly and the track was born.
